“Ragtime” in Production

The Dayton Playhouse, 1301 E. Siebenthaler Ave, Dayton, 45414 (located in the Wegerzyn Gardens Metropark) is thrilled to wrap-up its current season with the historic musical RAGTIME, book by Terrence McNally, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty. RAGTIME opens Friday, May 5 and will run through May 21. Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 pm and Sunday matinees are at 2 pm.

As we struggle, even today, with issues of bigotry, class warfare and the influx of immigrants to our country, RAGTIME is a moving and beautifully entertaining musical that takes us back to the turn of the century for a look at similar issues in those early days. Matthew Smith is directing this production. Smith will be assisted by musical director, Ron Kindell; choreographer, Nabachwa Ssensalo and guest choreographer, Michael Shepherd; set designer, Chris Newman; costumer, Theresa Kahle; and lighting designer, John Falkenbach. An incredibly talented cast of 39 men, women and children includes: Kip Moore as Coalhouse Walker, Rachel Jensen as Mother, Jeff Sams as Father, Tia Seay as Sarah, Franklin Johnson as Booker T. Washington, and Ron Maurer as Tateh.

In this lavish musical, the stories of an upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant and a daring young Harlem musician unfold – set in turn-of-the-century New York – all three united by their desire and belief in a brighter tomorrow. RAGTIME is a 13-time Tony nominated musical and has not been produced by any other community theatre in our area. The music includes marches, cakewalks, gospel and ragtime. Please be aware, the script and production include racially insensitive language.
